Greenhouse gases (GHGs) are the root cause of global climate change and are often subject to government regulation and public scrutiny. GHGs are emitted when a water utility uses energy to produce, transport, and distribute their water supply, as well as from household energy used for heating water. Climate change is contributing to severe weather patterns such as large storms, severe flooding, extended heat waves and widespread droughts. This creates a need for reinforced infrastructure and more efficient practices to save water, cut energy costs, comply with regulation, and adapt to changing weather patterns.
